Go Baby Go! Derby Week update

Newsletter 4/28/14

A note from Mrs. Horn…
thumbnail of Pimp HatOoh la la!  Fun times in Kindergarten!  It’s Derby Week, and we are working on our own Derby hats and floats for the parade.  All students will need a shoe box with a lid.  Please check out your craft supplies and send in embellishments!  Ideas include:  ribbons, fake flowers, feathers, foam sticker shapes, etc.   Thank you so much for your help!  I will post pictures to our class blog www.kinderpupnews.blogspot.com and will include these cute photos in their scrapbooks.  While you are out, you may want to ask your child if they need a new watercolors set (Crayola and Prang are the best).  We have been painting quite a bit, and many are running low.  No worries, I will send home all of their remaining supplies at the end of the year J  They can paint and play school all summer long!
Corn dogs, funnel cakes, cheese fries-oh my!  This week is “Chow Wagon” week in the cafeteria.  Those fabulous lunch ladies are cooking up some festive food for us!  The class with the most school lunches wins an ice cream party on Friday.

 What are we learning?
Reading Workshop
We are beginning a new unit and this week will identify similarities and differences between two texts on the same topic.

Writing Workshop
Writers revise!  We will learn about revision by studying Claude Monet and his many paintings of water lilies.  We will try to paint like Monet, and then the next day, we will look back and reflect on our painting and make a new plan.  We will look back at old writing pieces and see how we could improve those.

In addition, we will write about our family’s Derby traditions.  Talk with your child about the traditions your family has with our Kentucky Derby (family parties, Great Balloon Race, Thunder Over Louisville, etc.)

Word Study
This week we will learn about the word families: -ash, -ish, -ush. Our word wall words for this week are: came, take, good.

Math
We will revisit Geometry, and focus on 3D shapes and positional words (ie, the cube is behind the sphere, or under the cylinder).  These vocabulary concepts are tricky for kindergarteners.  We will explore putting 2 & 3D shapes together in centers and on the computer.

Science/ Social Studies
We are beginning our Animals Two-by-Two unit and will learn about goldfish, including their body parts, habitats and basic needs.  We will also learn about the traditions of the Kentucky Derby.

Weekly Update

A note from Mrs. Horn…

Earth Day is Tuesday!  This is a school wide cleanup day. The kindergarten classes are in charge of putting the mulch back on the playground.  Please send in items to help with this activity: gloves, shovels, small rakes, and pails.  Our classes will also paint a blue bird house to be put on our fence.

Arbor Day celebration!  We will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday.  Mr. Freyer will lead us through our ceremony, after which each child will receive a pine tree sapling.  You may want to think about a good place to plant it!

Derby Parade!  We will celebrate the Derby on May 2nd.  Please send in shoe boxes and decorations (stickers, ribbons, flowers, etc.) for your child’s Derby float and Derby hat.  We will “parade” through the school with our floats and hats at the end of the day.

Please also remember to send in a water bottle and healthy small snack each day.

We have about 10 children who know how to tie shoes! This is a great start!  If your child doesn’t know how to tie their shoes, now would be a great time to learn.  Check out some of the methods below.

 A note from Mrs. Horn…
Our hallway will be busy making notebooks to sell to the school for Relay for Life.  Students can preorder:  a bookmark ($1), notebook ($1), Harmony wooden coin ($2) or a set of “worry dolls” ($5).  All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.  All preorders must be in by Wednesday, April 16th.  This is our only fundraiser for Relay for Life.

With the weather warming up, we will be going outside as much as possible for recess and brain breaks! Please be sure your child has on proper shoes for the playground.  Flip flops, strappy sandals and crocs are cute, but dangerous for them to run in and wear on the playground equipment.

Please also do not forget to send in a water bottle and healthy small snack each day.

We are getting into the busy time of the school year!  Next week on Tuesday and Wednesday we will have scrimmage testing for 3rd-5th grade.  This means our Related arts time will be shorter and at a different time.
